What Are Medicare Supplements?

A Medicare supplement, also known as Medigap, is a type of health insurance plan that helps to cover some of the expenses not covered by standard Medicare coverage. The price for these plans is based on factors like your age, sex, smoking status, and zip code. Based on that information, Medicare supplements are rated into three policy types:

• Attained Age Rated: These plans are based on the age you were when you first purchased your policy and costs can increase as you get older.
• Community No Age Rated: These plans are based on the entire community and costs remain the same regardless of your age.
• Issue Age Rated: These plans are based on your age when you first purchased the policy.
